Hello Outliers! Mixed results today. Eleven scored cups, 10 lost cups, one player was new and 26 saw no change.
With the return of Ash05 and the arrival of Ashclone3 the clan score is in flux. However, JA lost 36 cups, DP lost 1, and UA gained 16.
Our winners included Ash05 (two-day total from when he left); Zubzubzub4000 (18); Peach2 (14); Zatzat_411 and Restcase (13); Kreshnic (8); Gourd (5); InAFlash and Tough02 (4 ea); Pyroman62 and Tiptop1222 (3 ea).
Please keep your eye on Ashclone3. He is here to demonstrate how a very low rated player can zoom up to a Level 10 totem.
Please attack daily, if you can. We need more clan points. Thanks.

Jungle Wars: Your target list
Sometimes a player will ask a clanmate to attack a certain player (for whatever reason, usually revenge).
The thing about Jungle Wars is that the target list is different for each player. It seems to be set to a limited number of players. As you gain cups, the system changes your target list. This happens at intervals that are hard to define.
So in asking someone to attack a player - that's a gamble with long odds. If you ask your clan to do it, it's possible someone may have that person on their target list.

Jungle Wars: Spider upgrades, worth it?
When I was in the 1000-cup bracket, there was an opponent who did his attacks almost entirely with spiders. I was surprised that at our level this might work, spiders being so frail. Perhaps he used this force structure way past its usefulness.
Here is a level 1 stat sheet for spiders (above).
Here is our fuzzy friend at level 6. Is the upgrade worth it? In my opinion, the upgrade is NOT if you are breeding for damage (stamina). The defensive fire that a Level 6 meets with way outmatches 53 damage points. In other words, by the time your spider is upgraded that high, your enemies will have also upgraded their defenses.
How about attacking power (hitpoints)? Again, I think not. You don't see much difference in the speed at which the spider destroys buildings. This is in part due to the fact that the enmy's building upgrades keep pace with your spider upgrades.
In sum, the weakness of the spider in early play persists into late play. I do keep a few (5) in the force mix when attacking; they are fast "mopping up" troops and when the clock is winding down, you need speed to squeeze an extra percentage point out of your win.
Your comments welcome, as always.

Jungle Wars: Combining gems
If you are new to the game and just beginning to collect gems, you may wonder what they are for. They strengthen different traits of the golem, based on color. Speed, attacking strength, stamina.
As time goes on, you are awarded gems when totems are destroyed. The process is random and a rule of thumb might be one gem in every 10 totem takedowns.
There comes a day when you have an assortment of gems (above). Let's call the smallest level 1 size. In the green gems shown above, there are four sizes we'll call levels 1 -4. You need five gems of identical size to combine into one gem at the next higher level. Let's combine five level 2 gems to make a level 3 gem. You want to combine the gems so that the bigger or better gem will give more points in the upgrade tab.
As I select each gem for combining, it disappears from the bottom row and goes to the top area. Notice the yellow stars over each gem. Each has a rating that equates to the power it gives the golem. Once we combine these, a level 3 gem have a star rating. It could be a weak level 3 gem or a strong one. Let's see. It will cost us 10,000 mana to upgrade this gem.
Here's the result. Before combining the level two gems I had: 1 level 3 5-star; 2 level 3 2-star; 1 level 3 1-star. Looking at the level 3 gems above, I see a 4-star gem. So my combination gained me a 4-star level 3 green gem. As a result of combining the five level 2 green gems into a level 3 gem, I now have five level 3 green gems.
And of course I can combine these into a level 4 gem although the cost is different. Now it's 1,000 wana. BTW, level 5 gems have a big G on them, not sure why and I haven't combined level 5 gems yet. Let's see what happens with that!
Your tips and comments welcome.

Jungle Wars: Anybody love wasps? Not me
Anybody love wasps? I think not. Here is a level 1 snapshot:
Notice that the hitting power (12) is similar to that of a single level one warrior! So this guy is flying into enemy territory with the hitting power of a single warrior and the enemy has slinger towers, magic towers, volcanos, and traps awaiting.
Here is a level 4 wasp. There are higher levels but I wised up after reaching level 4:
The damage inflicted by a level 4 warrior is 24. A level six warrior hits with 34. Imagine paying 2600 mana for one level six warrior who is subject to all manner of anti-aircraft fire! Those 340 hitpoints look good but trust me, they don't last long.
In the early stages of the game, say 600-900, I have seen opponents use mass wasp armies. The tradeoff in cost vs. time to produce vs. fragility seems unworthy of the inputs.

Jungle Wars: Free coins
People would tell me that you got coins for junk removal and I never believed them.
As I would clean up my base area to extend walls, I would never see a popup screen announcing "You've won X coins."
Well, I was doing some cleanup this week and I noticed my coin count go up. It pretty much worked as described in this chat excerpt from Talt (right).
The only hitch to this is that when you are resource poor, you need the coins the most and it costs food and mana to clean house.
Late in the game, when you are looking for ways to burn off excess food and mana, you're cleaning up and you earn coins that you don't need as much.
In any case, don't miss out on free coins. The junk regenerates creating a steady supply.

Jungle Wars, Kongregate: Clan turmoil
Lot's of doings to puzzle clan players. Two 700-level players quit their top three clans to form Rise of the Dark. This followed UA cutting Vyasada and Butuca a week after Chris W switched from UA to DP.
DP cut Grkmori today and Quoin is supposed to have quit DP to take up residence in JA, a DP R&R station (BTW).
Let's see what emerges.

Jungle Wars: Slinger upgrades, worth it?
One of the frail units in Jungle Wars has a pretty good usage level well into the player's 1000-cup career, and that is the slinger. Some use armies of slingers well into their middle careers.
Here's the basic slinger.

Jungle Wars: Gorilla upgrades, worth it?
So here is the basic gorilla with values at level 1.
Here is the same at max upgrade:
Is it worth it? Notice that the punishment the ape takes increases much but the attacking power not so much.
The gorilla is in an "arms race" against the firing platforms that are gorilla attack priority #1, so the increase in hitpoints is important. The highest level gorilla can take a few hits from the second-highest rated mortar, and that's worthwhile.
I think most players would agree that gorilla upgrades are worth it, almost a "no brainer."

Jungle Wars: Totem 11 glitch
MasterKeys posted information at the Kongregate public chat sharing some bad news (shown at right).
If you have more on this to share, please use the comments field below.
At Kongregate, as of this writing, four of the top 10 players have totems at level 11: Talt, Arrgh1, Gg1111, and Furia_2.
Looking at the silver lining in this, the developers say they are busy with something else; let's hope something good is on the way.
Update: Here is the link to Armor's chat (scroll down). It includes notes on which Armor players have Totem 11 and a screenshot of what it looks like.

Jungle Wars: Tiebreakers on the leaderboard
You can have two players tied in number of cups on the leaderboard and one is ranked above the other. How so?
If you look at the snip above, you'll detect the difference, though it's not obvious. The higher ranked player had more defenses won. The #8 player had many more successful attacks but the system used successful defence as the tiebreaker.
Here's another example, above. This one is ambiguous because #16 has more won attacks as well as more won defences.
Here's an interesting case: what if they tie is between players with no defences won? Can you figure that one out? The blue stars of experience here determine the ranking.
If defenses are the same, attacks are the same, blue stars are the same, what then? I'm still looking for an example of that.

The clan dropped 72 cups in part due to attacks and when Ssundee left to join the pirates.
JA lost 3, DP gained 13, UA gained 20.
We had small victories with Restcase (25); Ashclone (4); Gourd (3);
also Darkholme1906, Zatzat_411 and Shark07 (2 each).
Please help each other by donating only the best troops you can.

Jungle Wars: Upgrading pterodactyls
Is it worth upgrading pters? These two screen shots show the difference in values.
Here is the lowest level pter. Below is the highest level.
In my experience, the upgrades are not worth the enormous cost. The bird that cannot get the job done at level one is going to fail at max as well.
If you attack en masse with eight birds, you still need healing spells to get through the ack-ack, so the level is not terribly important. And if you win with eight birds and some spells, the system is not going to give you many clan points. It might even penalize the clan for overkill.

Jungle Wars: The value of walls
We had an interesting little talk in clan chat about upgrading walls: is it worth it?
The answer depends on whether or not you are in a dinosaur environment (if your foes have level 10 portals). Once I saw that my attackers consistently used dinos, I stopped upgrading walls since dinos can jump them.
(Note: pters can fly over walls but are rarely used in my experience. Wasps can fly over walls but they are frail and can be shot up quickly.)
You will see some mighty walls sometimes (see right) but be aware that advanced players have little to spend mana on and so they waste resources on useless things like upgrading rhinos (a separate topic) and walls.
Up until you encounter dino-equipped enemies, it makes sense to upgrade walls but at a lower priority than weapons platforms, totems, campfires or portals.

Jungle Wars: Skeletons vs Warriors
There's a general feeling in Jungle Wars that the skeletons raised by the necromancer are warrior strength. I would offer three observations, in order of conviction:
(1) They go through walls noticeably faster than warriors
(2) They take slightly more punishment
(3) They hit slightly harder (comment based on observing skeletons vs. golem).
As always, your observations welcome, too.

Outliers Academy is recruiting!
We've opened an "academy" operated by Ash05 in which he offers 6 months of training in advanced techniques and game insights to players with 1500 cups or more in JungleWars (Kongregate instance).
We'd invite you to join that "course" to improve your enjoyment (and maybe gameplay) - you would get all the benefits of clan play (troops, speedups) and an abundance of suggestions, ideas and experiments.
After six months, you would again go your own way (or join a clan of your choice). Do please consider this offer. You'll find Outliers Academy in a clan headquarters search.

Hello Outliers! We advanced today against heavy odds. Seven won cups, 8 lost, 1 rejoined and 30 saw no change.
We gained 43 cups. UA was up 14, DP also 14, JA was up 8.
Leading the way today were Questingraven and Shark07 (17 each);
Ssundee213 (16); Zatzat_411 (15); Ash_clone (8); and Aleena1009 and Restcase (7 each).
Again we overcame the competition on a bad day.

Jungle Wars: The magic hut
As you attack your way through this game, you will encounter high-ranked players with no fewer than five worker huts. The fifth hut is likely magical. It cannot be destroyed except by slingers or spearmen. Other units will beat on it without effect until time runs out or until headquarters clan defenders wipe them out.
Attackers get fixated on the magic hut. If they enter the map near the hut, they get engrossed in trying to destroy it and thus take themselves out of combat. Your score will suffer. In one game, I had five pters waste two minutes fixated on a hut. If I had had any spearmen in reserve, they could have been deployed nearby to wipe it out, freeing the other troops to go about their business.
Anyway, the hut above is a normal worker's home. The hut at the right is magic. Can you spot the difference? You would need to notice the difference before deploying troops for an attack because if you deploy near the magic hut, troops (depending on type) could get hung up there. On the other hand, if you deploy far away, they could wage their destruction over most of the village before coming on the magical item and getting stuck there.
Notice the magic hut casts no shadow. If you have an opinion on this building, please use the comments section. There is controversy around whether magic huts are a bug or a feature, whether they self activate or are activated by the player, and how to neutralize them in the attack..

Jungle Wars: Mystery wall cannot be targeted
Jungle Wars players encounter many mysteries, including the indestructible worker hut, but I found a very odd one yesterday.
My would-be victim was the pirate Dokie. His lower right-hand wall could not be targeted by my bombers. Have a look:
The bombers allowed me to select targets far away, on adjoining walls. Anybody see this before? Comment if so.

Jungle Wars: Scoring system for attacks
Jungle Wars, as any attacker knows, displays attacker success in the form of a percentage. Victory! XX%
What appears to happen is that the total building hitpoints in the village are added up and a percentage is derived from that. Very important to note that this is not the percentage of buildings destroyed, it appears to be the percentage of hitpoints destroyed. Since different buildings have different hitpoint values, the attacker should score a higher percentage by destroying high value buildings in preference to low value buildings. Your highest value building will tend to be your totem. By using walls to frustrate attacks on your totem, the defender denies the attacker the richest score. Your next most valuable buildings will vary with upgrades. Take the time to look at the hitpoints your buildings show and rank them. Then move them behind walls based on highest rank (greatest hitpoint value). Put them near firing platforms. Surround them with traps, etc. In other words, give protection priority to the high value targets.
There are exceptions to this rule. For example, if I think the mortar does the most damage to attackers, then I want to keep the mortar firing as long as possible. This is a lower value building but I want to keep it "alive" as long as possible during an attack, so I prioritize mortar protection. Here's part of a layout from Batmobile23's village: Notice the mortars are enclosed in their own protective walls. Notice also the position of the slinger towers. You might think they protect the totem but I think they are protecting the mortars.
To top things off, these lower value buildings form a barricade around the highest value building, the totem. Well done Batmobile23.
As an attacker, you might spend a moment scanning the map for the high value buildings before deploying your troops.
As always, your comments or questions welcome.

Jungle Wars: What's wrong with this layout?
So what's wrong with this layout? Your ideas in comments. I'll post my thoughts in a day. - Restcase
Update:
(1) Note all the little tombstones. If the village owner clicked on one, they would all disappear. Leaving them there provides skeletons that can be raised by an attacker with the necromancer unit. The attacker with necrom would have all of the attacking troops plus all these skeletons as bonus troops.
(2) Only one wall protects the totem. Two bombers could take out this wall. Once the Totem is lost, the defender loses the battle, even if not a single other building is destroyed.
(3) The clan headquarters (right side of picture) is too far away from the action. This building has a range: when enemies enter the range, clan troops deploy. To defeat the clan troops in this building, an enemy would deploy at the right edge (boundary) of the clan headquarter's range. As troops emerge, the attacker put down his best people to kill off the clan defenders. Then, down to business. Better to put that building where the mortar is so that enemies approaching the totem trigger a clan response.
(4) A slinger tower is being upgraded and is useless for defense. Put it outside the wall and bring something more valuable inside.
Your comments and ideas welcome.
